Indicators
Population, fertility, mortality, and migration indicators available across the release.
¶ Population
Population
| Indicator | Unit | Description |
|---|---|---|
| Median age population.median_age | years | The age that splits the population in half: half the people are younger and half are older. A rising median age is the clearest single sign of population ageing. |
| Population by 5-year age group population.by_age5 | people | Population as of 1 July, broken down by sex and five-year age group, from 0-4 up to 100 and over. This is the data behind each country's population pyramid. |
| Population density population.density | people per km2 | Number of people per square kilometre of land area, as of 1 July. |
| Population growth rate population.growth_rate | percent | How fast the population is growing or shrinking each year, as a percentage. It combines natural change (births minus deaths) with net migration; negative values mean the population is shrinking. |
| Sex ratio population.sex_ratio | males per 100 females | Number of males for every 100 females in the whole population. Most countries sit between about 90 and 105; very high values usually reflect large, mostly male migrant workforces, and low ones the shorter lives of men in parts of Eastern Europe. |
| Total population population.total | people | Everyone living in the country on 1 July of each year, counted where they actually live regardless of citizenship or legal status. |
¶ Fertility
Fertility
| Indicator | Unit | Description |
|---|---|---|
| Births fertility.births | births | Number of babies born alive during the year. It depends both on how many children each woman has and on how many women are of childbearing age. |
| Crude birth rate fertility.cbr | births per 1,000 population | Live births during the year per 1,000 people in the population. Unlike the fertility rate, it also depends on how many people are of childbearing age. |
| Mean age at childbearing fertility.mac | years | The average age of mothers when they give birth, across all births in the year. Later childbearing is one reason fertility rates fall. |
| Total fertility rate fertility.tfr | births per woman | The average number of children a woman would have over her lifetime if today's birth rates at each age held throughout her childbearing years. About 2.1 is replacement level: the rate at which a population holds its size in the long run, without migration. |
¶ Mortality
Mortality
| Indicator | Unit | Description |
|---|---|---|
| Crude death rate mortality.cdr | deaths per 1,000 population | Deaths during the year per 1,000 people in the population. It reflects age structure as much as health: countries with older populations have higher death rates even when people live long lives. |
| Deaths mortality.deaths | deaths | Number of deaths from all causes during the year. It rises as a population ages, even while health is improving. |
| Infant mortality rate mortality.imr | deaths per 1,000 live births | Deaths of babies before their first birthday, per 1,000 live births in the same year. |
| Life expectancy at birth mortality.life_expectancy | years | The average number of years a newborn would live if this year's death rates at each age stayed the same throughout their life. |
| Under-5 mortality rate mortality.u5mr | deaths per 1,000 live births | The chance of a child dying before their fifth birthday, expressed per 1,000 live births. |
¶ Migration
Migration
| Indicator | Unit | Description |
|---|---|---|
| Net migration migration.net | people | Number of people moving into the country minus the number moving out during the year. Negative values mean more people left than arrived. |
| Net migration rate migration.net_rate | per 1,000 population | Net migration (people arriving minus people leaving) per 1,000 people in the population. Negative values mean more people left than arrived. |
