This study uses retrospective household data from southwest Bangladesh and discrete time event history models to examine whether social ties to migrants moderate the effects of extreme weather (heat waves and storms/floods) on first migrations, distinguishing domestic versus international moves and male versus female household members. Findings show heat waves and storms/floods have small, gender-differentiated effects on domestic migration that are not moderated by social ties, while for male international migration, heat wave effects depend on community migration history: in communities with strong international migration networks, first international trips decline as heat waves intensify, whereas in communities with lower migration prevalence, the likelihood of a first international trip rises with heat waves up to 15–25 days before declining. Overall, the results indicate that migrant networks tend to attenuate rather than amplify the link between extreme weather and international migration.
